Hello Alpha Quadrant!

Hi, I’m The Modernish Father. Husband, father, taxpayer, etc, etc…

Three and a half years ago, I decided that I was going to watch every episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and write reviews of them to post online. It started off really well. But then, after three posts, I lost steam. Then I didn’t update a plugin and the site was hacked. And then…Shaka, when the walls fell.

But I’m back now, ready to start over again and plow my way through seven seasons of television.

Yes, others have done this. The AV Club is doing it right now. And probably doing a much better job of it than I will do. But I don’t really care.

When DS9 first aired 20+ years ago, I opted out after the first few episodes. There were a couple of reasons for this:

  • First and foremost, the station that DS9 aired on in our market was TERRIBLE. Even on cable, it routinely had a fuzzy, static-filled video signal and tinny, barely discernible sound. I would have had better luck trying to watch pirated UHF signals from Uganda using some tinfoil and a Pringles can.
  • Secondly, the Bajorans were a terrible society to build a show around. Preachy, angsty, and weird in a boring way. The producers agreed with that assertion as well, since they largely jettisoned the “let’s rebuild Bajor!” storyline after the first two seasons. By that time though, I was long gone.
  • Third, high school and college. I grew up with an obsession for TOS and TNG, but I didn’t really have the time or inclination to watch any TV for most of the 90s. I didn’t even get caught up on Seinfeld until a few years ago.

Since then, I’ve caught random episodes here and there, and the more I see, the more I’ve enjoyed it. I’ve got a general idea of how the later seasons played out, but there are some huge gaps in my knowledge of the series. I’m ready to fill in those gaps. I figured I might as well document it all while I’m doing it.

So here we are. My plan is to watch a new episode each week and share my thoughts here. I’ll give you some basic info, a fairly accurate recap of what happened, and my thoughts about all of it. And unlike those pansies at the AV Club, I’ll actually give each episode a grade. Just because I’m awesome like that.
